Ignore These Wedding Rules
February 18th, 2014
There are lots of old rules about planning your wedding. The real question is why should you follow them?
After all, it's your big day. You should do it however you want. Here are the top 7 wedding rules that you should feel free to ignore.
- The bride must wear a white gown.
We aren't all white gown kind of girls. Fortunately, designers are offering lots more options these days. You could go for pink, red, gray, or black - whatever suits you. If you want just a splash of color, you could wear a white gown with a sash or trim in a bright color. As for the veil, you don't have to wear one at all. You could replace it with a tiara, flowers in your hair, feathers, or just an elegant updo. You don't have to wear a traditional gown, either. You could go with a short dress or a pantsuit. It's your day, so you should wear something that you feel great in.
- You should hire friends to photograph/video/deejay your wedding to save money.
The truth is, you may not get the results you are looking for if you cut costs by hiring a friend instead of a professional. Besides, wouldn't you prefer that your friends enjoy your wedding instead of working at it? There are better ways to keep the budget in check.
- You have to invite anyone who invited you to their own wedding.
Lots of people have to limit their guest lists due to space or financial constraints. You shouldn't feel obligated to invite someone simply because they invited you. The most important thing is that you include the people who are closest to you. If someone incorrectly assumes that they are invited, just kindly tell them (as soon as possible) that you need to limit the guest list.
- Wedding planners are too expensive.
This one is definitely the old school way of thinking. The truth is, a wedding planner can actually save you money. They have relationships with vendors and can get you the best rates. Check into it; you may be pleasantly surprised.
- You can always save money by going DIY.
Doing it yourself is not always the better deal. You still have to buy all the supplies to make the table decorations, invitations, weddings, etc. Since you don't have a regular supplier, you will likely pay more for the supplies than a professional would. Your time is worth something, too.
- You have to have an equal number of bridesmaids and groomsmen.
You may not have the same number of close friends or family members, and you shouldn't ask someone to be in the bridal party simply to even the numbers. There's no reason why you shouldn't ask the people who are closest to you to stand up for you, regardless of how many people are standing on each side of the aisle.
- Your wedding will cost a fortune.
It really doesn't have to. Do you really want to start off your marriage with a mountain of debt? You can have a beautiful wedding without spending a ton of cash. Choose the details that are most important to you, and prioritize your spending there. There are lots of ways that you can cut corners and save some money so that you can have a beautiful wedding that isn't beyond your budget.
