Where to Drink? Try These New Beers and Relax
July 19th, 2013
Toronto has a great foodie scene, and it also has some cool places where you can relax and try some new beer. Here are some places you should try.
Indie Ale House
Indie Ale House is a chill bar in one of the coolest neighborhoods in town, the Junction. This bar is no pretense, just a great selection of funky beers. The options change all the time, but some of the popular choices include Dead Spadina Monkey, Cockpuncher IPA, and Broken Hipster Belgian Wit. You can try a sample of five brews for $10, which is a nice opportunity to try a variety. There are lots of unusual flavors to try, with everything from pale ales and stouts to sours and spiced beer. The Dead Spadina Monkey has a surprising sour raspberry flavor that is worth a taste. You can snack on parmesan and sage popcorn topped with bacon fat while you sip.
Bryden's is a cozy, well-loved, neighborhood bar located in Bloor West Village. The décor is comfy, with worn antique couches and a traditional brass rail bar. They have 16 taps, including a nice selection of local beer. Four of those taps are dedicated to a rotating selection of craft beer from Ontario and Quebec breweries. The pub fare is classic and yummy, like the nachos topped with pulled pork. Bryden's is a relaxing, friendly place to hang out and try some local brews. It has a bit of a television bar feel, with waitresses who know all the patrons. This could be your new hometown favorite.
If you want plenty of choices for your drink, The Rhino on Queen Street West is the place for you. They offer more than 300 varieties, including plenty of drafts, international bottles, and cans from every location on the globe. If you get hungry, try a Rhino burger or kebab; but really, this place is all about the beer.
The Bellwoods Brewery
The Bellwoods Brewery is a bit of country in Toronto. It is located in a building that used to be an auto body shop. It is set back from the street a bit, with a white picket fence and picnic tables outside. The garage door opens up to a big patio with plenty of seating. Inside, you get the feel of a farmhouse, with cement floors and worn tables. If you keep making your way up the stairs, you can sit at the bar and check out the huge beer tanks. The varieties of beer on offer change with the seasons, but there are plenty to choose from. You can walk next door to the retail store to buy a package to take home with you. Try the Witchshark, an Imperial IPA that is often available.
These are just a few of the great bars in Toronto where you can sample local and craft beers. What better way is there to spend a Saturday evening in the summer - or the fall, for that matter?
